Who it is for

Written for you if

  • Anyone holding a CP2000, CP14, CP501, CP503, CP504, LT11, Letter 1058, or 5071C and wondering what to do next.
  • Anyone unsure whether a letter, call, or text claiming to be from the IRS is real.
  • Taxpayers who owe a balance they cannot pay in full and want to know about payment plans, penalty relief, and free help.
What is inside

Chapter by chapter.

  1. 01

    Is It Really the IRS?

How the IRS actually makes first contact, what it says it will never do, a six-point check for any letter, and where to report a fake.

  2. 02

How to Read Any IRS Notice

Where the important information sits, which date controls, the two kinds of letters, and the cost of every day a balance stays unpaid.

  3. 03

CP2000: The IRS Thinks You Left Something Out

Why it arrives, how to agree or disagree, the 30-day window for a quick resolution, and the notice that follows if you do nothing.

  4. 04

CP14 to CP504: The Balance Due Ladder

What each balance due notice means, what changes at each step, and why the CP504 is serious but not yet the final word.

  5. 05

LT11 and Letter 1058: The Final Notice

What the final notice allows the IRS to do, the 30-day hearing right that protects you, and the weaker option if you miss it.

  6. 06

    5071C: Prove It Is You

Why the IRS stops a return to check identity, how to verify safely, what to have ready, and what to do if you never filed.

  7. 07

Paying, Penalty Relief, and Free Help

The payment plans and their fees, the first-time penalty waiver, what to do if you cannot pay, and when the Taxpayer Advocate Service or a free clinic can help.

  8. 08

    The Quick Reference Vault

Every notice on one line: what it means, the deadline, what to do, and what happens if you ignore it.

Three worksheets close the book: a notice log, an "Is this letter real?" check, and a call log. Answers to every check-yourself question, a glossary, and the complete source list follow.

What makes it different

The IKE standard.

Built from the IRS's own pages

Each letter's chapter comes from the IRS's Understanding Your Notice page for that letter and its sample notices, with collection rules from Publications 594 and 1660, Form 12153, and the Collection Due Process FAQs. The source list gives each page's last updated date.

The date on your notice controls

Most IRS notice pages give no fixed number of days, so the guide never invents one. It quotes a period only where an IRS page or publication states it, and says when the only evidence is a sample notice.

The two levy notices, separated

Why the IRS says it cannot levy with just a CP504, and why the LT11 or Letter 1058 starts a 30-day clock for a hearing you cannot get back.

Honest about limits

Where IRS sources differ, such as whether the 30 days run from the notice date or from receipt, the guide shows both and recommends the safer reading.

Built to use

4 figures, the critical facts and one action you can finish in under 30 minutes at the end of every chapter, three worksheets, and a one-line answer for every notice in the quick reference.
